Tiarella
Tiarella is another group of wonderful native
plants. They are usually divided in two groups: the
clump formers and the stoloniferous forms. All Tiarella
are spring bloomers. They prefer a moist soil high in
organic material and a location in the shade.
The stoloniferous form is Tiarella cordifolia or
Allegheny Foamflower, which is native to eastern North America.
Tiarella cordifolia will form a nice groundcover provided
sufficient shade and moisture are provided. The plants do
not like to have wet feet in the winter. The evergreen
foliage often has some burgundy coloration along the veins,
which is more noticeable in spring and fall. The foliage
is very similar to Heuchera americana.
The clump forming Tiarella is Tiarella
cordifolia var. collina also known as Tiarella wherryi.
These plants tend to form clumps rather than spread by stolons.
They are also usually a little taller than the stoloniferous
varieties.
